How Kay Bailey Hutchison Promotes Oil Dependence
Source: "How America can achieve true energy independence,"
Houston Chronicle, June 12, 2008
In her 15 paragraphs about oil extraction Senator Hutchison says
nothing about
fossil fuel conservation. In 1973-74 duting the first oil crisis, the
Republicans of
that era marched forth with a conservation program that galvanised
the whole
country: energy efficiency mandates for wide range of consumer
products including
automobiles, reduced energy use in all government buildings and
reservations,
reduced speed limits on all federal and state roadways, and a media
blitz directed
from Hollywood studios and New York networks. Furthermore the
passenger rail
network became subsidised and the freight rail network was
consolidated to
prevent receivership. Why ? Those Republicans knew that rail is the
cheapest and
most efficient way to move goods and produce in a time of national
emergency.
In every paragraph Hutchison promotes petroleum extraction: ANWR,
Colorado
shale, and deepwater ocean. Claiming to be a champion for energy
independence,
the Senator is actually a crusader for petroleum DEpendence. She
doesn't want
Americans to send $500 billion abroad each year for foreign oil. But
she does want
us to spend one million dollars for extraction of each one million
dollars worth of
pumped fuel.
Take a look at the mess in her home state. Interstate 69 corridor is
taking away
thousands of acres of farm and ranch lands for a macadamized
superhighway that
will carry Mexican factory goods and produce to the "upper 49"
states. For years she
was a champion of rail , and none of this freight will move on rails
drawing kilowatts
off a national grid. If we are to provide Mexico with a fossil fuel
delivery system for
their products, then we should at least ask the Mexicans to subsidise
the price of diesel
in Texas. Add to this the "Houston-Dallas" corridor, another fossil
fuel burning
extravaganza without rail. What about the "San Antonio-Dallas"
corridor and all its
hundreds of paved hectares ?
Sage advice to Senator Hutchison: vote for the candidate and the
party that will put
teeth in the meaning of "conservation." The Republicans of 35 years
ago started the
energy conservation movement. Let us hope the party of the Left will
carry that
movement to its proper and rightful conclusion.

Please explain what you think you were saying with:

#1. Do you think freight railroads are powered
by electricity off the "national grid"?
Totally separate question:
#2. How do you think the majority of electricity
for the "national grid" is created?

energy efficiency mandates for wide range of --

And, while I'm posting,
#3. How happy were the majority of voters with
the nationwide 55 mph limits?
#4 related - Do you accept the results of democracy or not?
I do not mind reading a variety of opinions,
but Holly Molly!, it would sure be better if they at least
were logical, and consistent with some basis of facts. |

Rail transport is the most efficient way to move bulk cargo, finished
products, and produce on land. High speed rail calls for electrification.
I do not believe French TGV's and Japan bullet trains run on diesel.
#1. Do you think freight railroads are powered
by electricity off the "national grid"?
My statement is not a fact but an inference. My statement infers
that a massive multi-lane highway is taking shape without regard to
more efficient means of transport. We have already had the spectacle
of diesel 18 wheelers stacked up from Laredo to San Antonio.
Thousands of these rigs belching carbon into the environment.
Totally separate question:
#2. How do you think the majority of electricity
for the "national grid" is created?
If most of our power is created by coal burning power plants, then
we have already had a wake up call called "global warming."

Our democracy is not yet on the level of mob rule. We elect executives and
legislators who have 4 years to say and to do what they think is best.
This is called "the electoral mandate." The German electorate gave Hitler
the mandate to restore the Reich. The American people gave George |
Bush
the mandate to avenge 9/11. The Russian people gave Vlad Putin the
mandate to build a new society.
Abraham Lincoln had the mandate in 1861, and he proceeded to take many
anti-democratic actions. George Bush had the mandate and he also
behaved anti-democratically. Our next President will have the mandate
and
he also will resort to antidemocratic methods to accomplish the party
agenda.
So for each four year interim of rule, the will of the majority or the
minority
is canceled out by their own elected representatives and executives.
So get ready to pay your share of the cost to stop global warming,
even
if it means returning to four cylinders and 55 mph maximum speed.
Cheers, David H

Well anyway,425, thanks for your criticism and your avoidance
of ad hominem garbage.
